Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has expressed concern that more fines have been issued to drivers in North Wales for breaching the 20mph speed limit compared to all other parts of Wales.
The April figure for North Wales, showing 660 offences, is larger than any monthly total for Mid and South Wales combined.
Commenting, Darren said:
“It concerns me greatly that more drivers in North Wales have been issued with fixed penalty notices for breaching the 20mph limit than in any other part of Wales, despite figures showing that the average speed of offenders is lower in the region.
“It has been my fear since the proposals for a blanket 20mph speed limit were first mooted, that this new policy could put people off coming to North Wales, and with headlines stating that there more fines in the region that other parts of the country we may well now see this happening.
“The Welsh Labour Government seems intent on penalising motorist and it is grossly unfair that it is drivers in North Wales who are being hit hardest by their disastrous policy.
“We must remember that 450,000 people signed a petition calling on the Welsh Government to remove the 20mph, shattering Senedd records."
He added:
“The Welsh Labour Government must admit that it has gotten this expensive and unnecessary policy wrong and take urgent action to reverse it, and take a more targeted approach to 20 mph speed limits near schools, playgrounds, accident hotspots and the like.”
