Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has thanked volunteers who are running a church luncheon club after paying them a visit last week and learning more about how they are helping to get residents connected to their local area.
Darren popped in to see the Oasis Community Luncheon Club at Festival Church Towyn last Wednesday.
Whilst there Darren met with volunteers, as well as people attending the club, and enjoyed some lovely cakes, tea and sandwiches too.
He also met with pupils from Coleg Llandrillo catering course who assist during the sessions.
Speaking afterwards, Darren said:
“Oasis was originally known as ‘Soups’ which has been running for approximately 20 years as a lunch club for the community.
“After a kitchen refurbishment they re-opened as Oasis at the end of January. They provide homemade soup and cake and tea and coffee every Wednesday from 11:45am – 1.30pm, and occasionally a cream tea.
“It was a real pleasure to pay a visit and to meet those who are running the club, as well as some of those who attend.
"It is a great club and I would encourage anyone in the community looking for companionship and good food to come along.”
Paula Owens at Festival Church, said:
“We have been privileged to run a luncheon club for the past 20 years which has given us fantastic connections and friendships within the community.
“After a couple of years break, following the COVID restrictions and a full kitchen refurbishment, we were excited to relaunch the luncheon club as Oasis, at the end of January '24.
“From a soft launch of 8 people, we were thrilled last week to see 27 people tucking into lunch together. Our aim is to see more than 40 people coming for their lunch each week.
“We meet each Wednesday when lunch consists of delicious homemade soups, bread and cakes. There is a suggested donation of £3.50, but our priority is to provide homemade food, a relaxing and fun space for people in our community to come together.
“There is a community friendship group called Mix and Mingle (run by Cllrs Bernice McLoughlin and Lynda Griffiths) that also meets here on Wednesday afternoons from 2-4pm. Many who come to Oasis then stay on for Mix and Mingle, which is brilliant and we are pleased to be able to collaborate together for these community activities.”
