Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed a commitment from the First Minister to improve safety on two dangerous stretches of the A494 trunk road in Denbighshire.
Darren has been campaigning for the speed limit to be reduced from 40mph to 30mph in Pwllglas, near Ruthin, for some time and also launched a petition calling for improvements on Lôn Fawr in Ruthin.
At the request of Darren, First Minister, Mark Drakeford, visited the area on Friday to observe the issues Darren has repeatedly raised in the Senedd.
As a result, the Welsh Government has now confirmed that it will install a pedestrian crossing in Pwllglas, review the speed limit with a view to a reduction from 40mph to 30mph, and to consider installing flashing signs.
At Lôn Fawr in Ruthin, the First Minister confirmed that the Lôn Fawr/Corwen Road junction will be re-engineered and a change of priority and improved signage will be also be considered. The Welsh Government has also agreed to undertake a review of the speed limit with a view to reducing it from 60mph and will consider widening the highway where it is narrow.
Commenting Darren said:
“I have been raising road issues in Pwllglas and Lôn Fawr with the Welsh Government for years, so I was grateful to the First Minister for taking me up on my offer to visit the area to see the problems first-hand.
“I held a meeting with the First Minister in Pwllglas, with attendees including representatives from North Wales Police, Efenychtyd Community Council, stakeholders and local residents, and I was pleased to show him the new recreation area in the village.
“Later, we travelled along the stretch of the A494 at Lôn Fawr so the First Minister could observe the road for himself and see the risk it currently poses to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
“We then visited Ruthin Rugby Club, where we met Ruthin Town Council members and stakeholders and representatives from Ruthin Club, Ruthin Lawn Tennis Club and local football clubs too.
“It has been a long time coming, but this commitment from the First Minister to make improvements at both locations is very welcome news indeed and residents are delighted that progress is at last being made.
“People should feel safe on our roads and these proposed improvements would ensure that they do.”
