Cancer touches the lives of so many of us, whether that’s personally, or supporting friends, family and colleagues with a cancer diagnosis. We know that one in two of us will get cancer-
Macmillan Cancer Support wants to ensure that, in future, no-one faces cancer alone.
The charity helps people from the moment they are diagnosed, with medical and practical help, as well as emotional and financial support. But they rely on donations from the public to help fund their work.
Each year they hold their biggest fundraiser, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which involves people from all over the UK hosting their own Coffee Mornings with donations on the day being made to Macmillan.
A Coffee Morning can be whatever you want it to be. It could be at home, on your driveway, a hall or online, whatever suits you best. You can hold a garden get together and throw a barbeque, or treat your colleagues to some homemade bakes, or even get together with friends for a takeaway.
The official date for the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Friday 29 September, but this doesn't mean you can't host at other times of the year! You can host your coffee morning whenever suits you best.
Over the years I have been to many ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ events at various venues both in my constituency in Clwyd West and in Cardiff. It is a fantastic way to get together, share a slice of cake and a cuppa and raise some money for charity and I would urge people here in North Wales to get involved this year by hosting or attending a coffee morning in their local area on, or around, September 29th.
Money raised by events such as World’s Biggest Coffee Morning help fund Macmillan’s work in Wales, including funding or nurses, physiotherapists, welfare benefits advisors and its information centres in some of Wales’s hospitals, as well as campaigning for better cancer care for patients.
£71 could help run Macmillan’s Online Community forum for over 3 hours. Typically, that would give nearly 198 people affected by cancer both emotional and practical support by providing a safe environment to share their experiences and emotions.
£100 could pay for a person affected by cancer to attend a health and wellbeing event, providing them with skills to improve the management of these areas in their lives.
£350 could pay for a Macmillan grant that helps a family affected by cancer take a holiday and enjoy precious time together. This can relieve financial pressure on a family that has been affected by cancer.
£646 could pay for a Macmillan Support Worker for a week, helping patients, family members and carers manage the social and practical problems of living with cancer.
£1202 could pay for a Macmillan nurse for a week, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.
The first ever Macmillan Coffee Morning happened way back in 1990. It was a rather small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process. It was so effective, they did it again the following year – only this time nationally. It has grown year on year since.
