Clwyd West MS Darren Millar hosted a Holocaust Memorial event in the Senedd this week, at which Holocaust survivor Hedi Argent MBE told her powerful story.
In the week of Holocaust Memorial Day (January 27th), Darren hosted the event with the Holocaust Educational Trust (UK). He also signed the Trust’s Book of Remembrance.
Speaking after the event, he said:
“The Holocaust was a terrible and defining episode of the twentieth century, which undoubtedly changed the course of history, and it is important that we remember all those who suffered and lost their lives at the hands of the Nazi regime and reaffirm our commitment to tackling anti-Semitism, racism and hate wherever it occurs.
“It was an absolute privilege to meet Holocaust survivor Hedi Argent MBE at the event in the Senedd and to listen to her powerful story.
“Hedi has done so much great work educating people of all ages about the Holocaust and her testimony, along with the objects she has donated, provide a crucial role in Holocaust education and will continue to teach people for years to come.
“The theme of Holocaust Memorial Day 2023 is ‘Ordinary People’. The victims of the Holocaust were ordinary people like us, as Hedi has demonstrated to the many people of all ages that she has told her story to over the years. There are no better teachers than survivors of the Holocaust. Hearing their testimonies is compelling, but having a conversation with them is life-changing.
“I wish to thank Hedi and the Holocaust Educational Trust for all that they do to ensure that the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust, as well as in other genocides from Bosnia and Darfur to Cambodia and Rwanda are remembered. It is our duty to learn from mistakes of the past and to ensure they are never repeated.”
