Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has joined with Butterfly Conservation to promote the ‘Big Butterfly Count’ taking place from the 15th July to the 7th August.
Over the three week period people are being asked to spend 15 minutes outside in a sunny spot and count the amount and type of butterflies they see. They can then submit their results via the free app or via www.bigbutterflycount.org.
Speaking on the ‘Big Count’ Darren said:
“I am delighted to be joining with Butterfly Conservation in this amazing effort to gather as much data as possible to secure the future for as many species as possible.
“North Wales is the home to a great range of butterflies which form such an important and beautiful part of biodiversity across the region.
“In May this year we learned that half of Britain’s remaining butterfly species are now on the Red List and threatened or near threatened with extinction. The Big Butterfly Count is vital in helping scientists understand more about what is happening to the nation’s butterflies.
“I would encourage everyone across North Wales to visit the website, take part in the Big Butterfly Count and to encourage friends and family to join in too.
“Efforts like this are so important for species conservation and for having a better understanding of what is happening to our environment and local species.”
