Rugby World Cup-winning coach Sir Clive Woodward was paid at least £10,000 of taxpayers' money by a Welsh education body to give an hour-long talk, it has been revealed.

The former England and Lions rugby chief spoke at a conference in Llandudno in July held by north Wales schools consortium GWE.

Welsh Conservatives have called the payment "eye-watering".

Darren Millar, Assembly Member for Clwyd West, said:

“These are eye-watering sums of money.

“Spending thousands on celebrity speakers at a time when schools are having to slash budgets because of funding pressures is just plain wrong.

“There are plenty of inspirational people and unsung heroes working in Welsh schools who would have spoken at this event for free had they been asked.

“It is essential that the regional education consortia in Wales are held to account for extravagances like this so that it doesn’t go unchallenged.”
