The CEO of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums has expressed concern about the potential impact of the Welsh Government’s proposed Tourism Tax on footfall at Welsh zoos.

Dr Kirsten Pullen spoke of her concern when questioned on the matter by Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar during at Question and Answer session at a British Irish Parliamentary Assembly Plenary in Liverpool last week.

Darren said:

“During the plenary there was a presentation from Dr Kirsten Pullen the CEO of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums followed by a question and answer session. During the session I asked Dr Pullen whether she was aware that the Welsh Government are considering the introduction of a tourism tax and what her views were on such a proposal.

“She was very concerned about the potential impact on footfall at Welsh zoos and the impact that it could have on their sustainability and ability to invest in research and conservation.”

He added: “Zoo’s such a Colwyn Bay’s Welsh Mountain Zoo are important tourism destinations, providing visitors of all ages with a fun day out as well as the opportunity to learn about a variety of animals and birds. In recent years the Welsh Mountain Zoo has gone from strength to strength and it would be a great travesty if the Welsh Government put its future in jeopardy by forging ahead with its ludicrous plans to introduce a Tourism Tax.

“I therefore urge them to listen to the warnings expressed by the professionals, such as Dr Kirsten Pullen, and rethink their proposals.”
