Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has expressed concern at new figures which reveal that Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board recorded the highest number of deaths in hospitals caused by breaches in patient safety in the whole of Wales.

According to figures released today by the Welsh Government, deaths in Welsh NHS hospitals caused by breaches in patient safety have more than doubled since 2016,

In 2017, 77 patient deaths resulting from what NHS Wales describes as an “unintended or unexpected incident” were recorded across seven health boards – this compared to 31 deaths a year earlier, marking a 116% year-on-year rise.

More than half (53%) of these deaths – 41 – in 2017 came from Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board, which is currently in special measures – the highest form of Welsh Government intervention.

Commenting on the figures, Darren said:

“These figures are deeply concerning, but particularly so for those living in North Wales.

“The fact that more than half of these deaths came from Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, a health board that is in special measures, is absolutely appalling.

“Patients and the public need to have confidence that when they are in hospital they are in good hands, not living in fear of being admitted to hospital.

“Welsh Conservatives have called for the Cabinet Secretary for Health to instigate an immediate inquiry into to why the safety of Welsh NHS patients is becoming increasingly compromised under his Government’s watch. This needs to be carried out as quickly as possible, before more lives are lost.”
