Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has cut the ribbon at the official opening of a new outdoor ‘Woodlands Education Centre’ in Denbighshire.

The outdoor education area has been developed in MHC’s (Mental Health Care) ancient orchards on Highfield Park, Llandyrnog, to broaden the experiences and opportunities for the people they support, including individuals with learning disabilities, mental health issues, behaviours that challenge and autism.

The outdoor activities incorporate an educational experience for individuals through alternative means.

All activities offered aim to be accredited through the National Open College Network and include;- gardening, horticulture, teamwork, maintaining habitats and plants and using local and seasonal produce to create healthy meals. There is also areas for relaxation and music.

All activities and opportunities aim to increase the well-being and quality of life of the people MHC support through fresh air, exercise, education and being part of meaningful projects.

Darren, who planted a Lavender bush at the opening to mark the start of the maze project, said:

“It was an honour to undertake the official opening of this exciting project.

“I was very impressed by the wide range of stimulating learning activities which the Woodland education project will be providing for residents and staff at Highfield Park.

“MHS have used their creativity to establish a space which will enrich the lives of those they support and it really is leading the way in providing innovative and high quality environments for those in its care.”
