Assembly Member for Clwyd West, Darren Millar, has welcomed the introduction of compulsory lessons in money management in Welsh schools from this month.
All pupils between 7 and 19 years of age will now receive education in personal financial management as part of a revised national curriculum.
Darren Millar said, ‘I welcome the long-overdue introduction of money management into Welsh classrooms. It is something that we have been calling for over many years.
‘With personal debt in Wales is at a record high, it is common sense that pupils are equipped should be equipped with the vital practical skills they need to manage their finances properly and avoid unnecessary debt when they leave school – especially with the current credit crunch biting so hard and many students having to face large loans to fund them through university.
‘Let’s hope that the Assembly Government will also consider the reintroduction of other practical life skills on a compulsory basis into schools in Wales, such as simple home management and food preparation.’
He added, ‘Given the record levels of government debt in the UK, the government would do well to heed some of the lessons which Welsh pupils will now have access to.’
