The future of a Ruthin care home will be decided by Denbighshire County Council’s Cabinet next month.
Feedback on the Council’s review of its care homes will be reported to members of Denbighshire’s Performance Scrutiny Committee next week, with recommendations for Awelon, an three other establishments, being scrutinised ahead of a Cabinet meeting on May 24.
Welsh Conservative Assembly Candidate for Clwyd West Darren Millar, who has previously expressed concern over plans for the future of the home, said:
“Awelon is a fantastic care home and has played an important part in the locality for many years.
“It is therefore incredibly disappointing that the council is planning to stop new admissions and seeking to move residents to suitable alternatives. The Council have said they will work with the individuals and their families, at their own pace, to move them to them and I very much hope they are true to their word. This is a very unsettling time for residents and their loved ones.
“The proposals involve the Council entering into a partnership with the owner of Llys Awelon to develop additional Extra Care apartments on the site and the Cabinet has agreed that nobody will be required to leave if they don’t want to leave and that their needs can still be met there.
“Given the vulnerability of the residents, it is crucial that the Council gives them all the support possible and I will be pushing to ensure that they do.”
The Performance Scrutiny Committee will meet on Tuesday, April 12 at County Hall, Ruthin at 9.30am where the proposals will be scrutinised. It should be noted that no final decision will be made at this meeting.
A formal report will then be taken to the Council’s Cabinet on Tuesday, May 24. This date has been put back to enable sufficient time for any feedback from Scrutiny Committee to be given full consideration in the report.
