With Conwy County Council having announced yesterday that an application for permission to demolish Colwyn Bay Pier has been submitted, Clwyd West AM Darren Millar is calling on the Welsh Government to assure that no decisions are made until the outcome from the Heritage Lottery Fund bid.
The town’s Victoria Pier is the subject of a dispute between Conwy County Council, who want to demolish the ageing structure, and Colwyn Victoria Pier Trust, who want to redevelop it for community use. The Trust have submitted a bid to the Heritage Lottery is the hope of securing funding to restore the pier, but are yet to hear whether or not their application has been successful.
Darren said:
“I know that all those who are against the demolition of the pier will be concerned by this latest development, but I want to assure them that I am doing everything within my power to ensure that decisions aren’t made until we know the outcome of the Heritage Lottery Fund bid.
“Yes, the pier has been an eyesore on the waterfront in Colwyn Bay for far too long and is letting the town’s regeneration efforts down, but given the importance of the pier to the heritage of Colwyn Bay and the prominent position it has on the local waterfront, it would be wrong to steam ahead with plans for demolition without giving the lottery bid a chance.”
