Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has presented two files of over 800 objections to the closure of Ysgol Llanbedr to Denbighshire County Council.
Darren joined Headteacher Mrs Jaine Heginbotham to hand over the files yesterday, which was the deadline for objections to the local authority's plans.
At the end of October, Denbighshire County Council’s Cabinet members rejected proposals to allow a public consultation on an alternative plan to federate the Ruthin school with Ysgol Trefnant and decided to press ahead with the closure of the school.
Darren, who has been campaigning with parents, governors and staff to save the village school, said:
“There has been widespread opposition to the closure of Ysgol Llanbedr from the start and the fact that more than 800 people have taken the time to submit objections at this latest stage shows that campaigners are as determined as ever to save this fantastic school.
“Ysgol Llanbedr is the heart of the local community and these objections send a strong message to officers that parents, pupils and staff are not prepared to give up the fight to secure its future. It has a distinctive and valued ethos as a small rural Church school and to lose it would be devastating.
“I urge Denbighshire County Council to listen this time and take on board local views and recognise the unique, faith provision which Ysgol Llanbedr provides.”
