Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has welcomed the fact that Denbighshire County Council has agreed to delay the consultation over the future of Ysgol Llanbedr which was scheduled to commence today.
Discussions with the Church in Wales Education Diocesan representatives will take place shortly to consider the long term implications of the recommendations from Denbighshire for the three faith primary schools in the Ruthin area, namely Ysgol Llanbedr, Ysgol Llanfair DC and Ysgol Borthyn, and it is expected that the outcome of these discussions will be reported to elected members in October.
A spokesperson for Denbighshire stated that "the Church in Wales are important partners in the provision of education and the need to hold further discussions to ensure that there is a clear understanding of their long term vision for education in the area will assist our future planning."
Darren, who in July organised a public meeting to enable those opposed to the proposals to make their views known to the local authority, said:
"Ysgol Llanbedr is the heart of the local community and is a fantastic school. Concerned parents, teachers and governors all oppose the proposal to close the school and I am therefore extremely pleased that the council has listened to their views and agreed to delay the consultation to enable discussions with the Church in Wales Education Diocesan representatives to take place.
"All three schools under review have a distinctive and valued ethos as Church schools and to lose them would be devastating. As the Church in Wales have highlighted, each school serves a distinct area and their closure would remove from parents adequate choice with regard to faith based provision. I welcome the fact that Denbighshire have taken all these concerns onboard and agreed to further discussions."
