Clwyd West MS Darren Millar is demanding an urgent meeting with Royal Mail following complaints of delayed mail deliveries, or mail only being delivered twice per week, and allegations from whistleblowers at sorting offices in Rhyl and Colwyn Bay that parcels are being prioritised over letters.
In recent weeks, Darren has received increasing complaints from constituents about their mail not arriving on time.
People are claiming that they are only receiving their post twice a week instead of daily.
Now allegations have been made by whistleblowers in Colwyn Bay and Rhyl soring offices that parcels are being prioritised over letters, with managers instructing staff to deliberately delay delivering letters, sometimes for up to five days at a time.
Commenting, Darren said:
“In recent weeks I have been receiving an increasing number of complaints regarding the delayed delivery of letters in both Denbighshire and Conwy. I contacted Royal Mail who sought to assure me that there were isolated problems due to staff leave.
“However, I have since been contacted independently by four whistleblowers from both the Rhyl and Colwyn Bay sorting offices who claim that Royal Mail managers are deliberately asking postal workers to prioritise parcel deliveries over letters, leading to letters building up at sorting offices and being delivered in batches rather than daily. This is totally unacceptable but rings true given the conversations I have been having with constituents in recent weeks.
“Given the Royal Mail’s universal service obligation and recent inflation busting rises in the costs of stamped and franked mail, such behaviour is unacceptable and I am alarmed at what I have been told.
“I have therefore written to Royal Mail to request an explanation and demand an urgent meeting to discuss matters.
“Residents and businesses in Conwy and Denbighshire need to be having their mail delivered on time.”
