Clwyd West AM Darren Millar planted a tree in the grounds of a Denbighshire village school on Friday at a special event to mark it being saved from closure.
Darren, who campaigned alongside staff, parents and the Church in Wales to save Ysgol Llanbedr, near Ruthin, after Denbighire County Council’s Cabinet confirmed in January last year its intention to close the school, was delighted when two weeks ago the Education Minister rejected the Council’s request to close the 150 year old rural school.
On Friday a celebratory afternoon tea was held at Ysgol Llanbedr for pupils, parents and friends of the school and Darren planted an apple tree in the grounds to mark the occasion.
Darren said:
“It was great to return to Ysgol Llanbedr on Friday for such a happy occasion and to be joined by all those who fought hard for the school and never lost faith that we would secure the right outcome.
“Planting a tree in the grounds, surrounded by all the children who will benefit from this school being kept open, was an extremely momentous occasion. I will enjoy returning to the school in future years and watching both the tree and the school flourish.”
Cllr Huw Williams, who represents Llanbedr DC, was also at Fridays celebrations.
He said:
“Everyone in the local community is delighted that this fantastic school has been saved and I thoroughly enjoyed joining many of them on Friday to celebrate our victory in what was a very hard battle.”
