Responding to Professor Laura McAllister’s comments highlighting the “major weaknesses” of the proposed closed list system for Senedd elections, Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for the Constitution, Darren Millar MS said:

“Labour and Plaid’s plans to expand the Senedd and scrap the ability for voters to support a candidate of their choice are a disaster for democracy in Wales.

“Closed list electrical systems diminish direct accountability between Members of the Senedd and those who elect them, and take power away from the people and hand it to political parties. 

“It's time these plans were ditched.”

He added:

“Wales needs more doctors, dentists, nurses and teachers, not more politicians.”
