Clwyd West Assembly Member, Darren Millar, has welcomed news that a Conwy County Borough Council scrutiny committee has recommended ditching plans to roll out a 4-weekly bin collection across the county.

On Monday, the Council's Economy and Place Scrutiny Committee voted in favour of keeping the existing three-weekly collections, following a trial involving 10,900 properties.

Darren, who has been leading a campaign to get monthly collections scrapped in Conwy, is delighted by the news.

He said:

“This is great news for residents in the county who have been against these plans since they were first announced. I am delighted that common sense has prevailed and that the committee members recognised the reasons why monthly collections are such a bad idea.”

He added:

“It’s really important to take the public with you on the recycling journey. We’ve been successful as a nation in doing that to date, but when you reduce waste collection services to a four-weekly basis, you really do begin to lose people’s goodwill.

“Four weekly collections have proved to be extremely unpopular in the areas where they have been piloted and have led to an increase in fly-tipping and litter as well as an increase in rodent sightings. I’m all for encouraging recycling, however reducing bin collections is not the answer and I hope that Conwy’s Cabinet recognise this and follow the recommendations made by the Committee when they make the final decision on these plans early next month.”
