The first St David’s Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast for Wales will take place this week, with people and dignitaries from Wales and across the world set to attend.

The event is being hosted by Clwyd West AM Darren Millar, along with his colleagues Mike Hedges AM, Dai Lloyd AM, Russell George AM, will take place at 8am on St David’s Day on Thursday, in the Pierhead, Cardiff Bay.

The breakfast is bringing together keynote speaker, BBC broadcaster and News at Ten presenter Huw Edwards, the Presiding Officer of the National Assembly, Welsh Government representatives, Welsh Assembly Members, leaders from throughout Wales, international guests and others to share in the spirit of prayer and thanksgiving for the nation of Wales and its rich Christian heritage.

“It is a real honour to be one of the hosts for this momentous event. We have an extensive guest list of people from across Wales and the world so it promises to be a very special day.

“The Breakfast will also coincide with an exhibition of rare items from the archives of the National Library of Wales which represent significant chapters in Wales’ rich history.

“These treasures include Mary Jones’ Bible. In the year 1800 Mary Jones, the 15-year-old daughter of a weaver from Llanfihangel-y-Pennant at the foot of Cader Idris, walked 25 miles, barefoot and across rugged mountain country, simply to buy a Bible from the Reverend Thomas Charles of Bala, who then used her story to inspire the establishment of the Bible Society.

“Other items at the exhibition include a Bible which was buried In Madagascar by Welsh missionaries fleeing persecution only to be dug up decades later. Personal letters between leaders of the 1859 religious awakening in Wales and scorched pages of a Bible belonging to the leader of the 1904 Welsh revival, Evan Roberts.”

Pedr ap Llwyd of the National Library of Wales added: “The National Library is pleased to be able to support the first St David's Parliamentary Breakfast for Wales and exhibit treasured items from our collections which represent significant chapters in our nation's rich history.”

Darren and his colleagues will also be hosting an international reception on the eve of the breakfast which will take place in the Senedd.
