Parents and pupils in Towyn are up in arms following Conwy County Council’s decision to axe free home to school transport for dozens of Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan pupils.
The council argues that the children live within three miles of the Abergele school and that it is therefore not obliged to provide transport.
Clwyd West AM Daren Millar met with the angry parents and pupils yesterday to discuss the issue and is now calling on the council to reverse its decision.
He said:
“Parents and pupils in Towyn are understandably extremely angry about the council’s decision. The Council did offer concessionary passes at £50 per term, but these are now being withdrawn from students too. Many can't afford these passes in any case, especially those with two or more children.
“Parents are concerned that their children will now have to walk to school along the busy coast road, no matter what the weather.
“The ridiculous thing is that in some cases children living just a few doors apart are being treated differently - some get free transport and others don't. All pupils should be treated fairly and be given the same rights to transport.
“This decision must be reversed and I will be doing everything my power to ensure that it is.”
