Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Darren Millar MS, has visited one of the UK’s largest energy from waste operators to learn more about their exciting plans for the future.
Last Friday, along with his Welsh Conservative colleagues Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Energy, Samuel Kurtz MS, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Sam Rowlands MS, and North Wales MS Mark Isherwood, Darren visited the enfinium Parc Adfer facility in Deeside.
Parc Adfer is owned by the five local authorities of Flintshire, Denbighshire, Conwy, Gwynedd, and Anglesey, and enfinium operate it on their behalf.
Since opening in 2019, Parc Adfer has made a significant contribution to Wales’s world-leading efforts to end landfill and create a circular economy.
They have ambitious plans to install carbon capture technology at Parc Adfer, which would not only make the site one of the first commercial scale carbon capture and storage projects in the world, but also the largest source of carbon removals in Wales.
During his visit, Darren was given a tour of the facility to learn more about what it does and spoke to the management team about its potential for the future.
Speaking after his visit, Darren said:
“Parc Adfer is an impressive facility, efficiently converting waste into power for the National Grid, playing a valuable part of the UK’s circular economy and waste management solutions.
“It was good to hear of their ambitious plans for the future during my visit, including the bid they submitted earlier this year to the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) for Parc Adfer to become a ‘Track-1’ project as part of the HyNet carbon transport and storage network.
“I was pleased to learn that they recently passed DESNZ’s Deliverability Assessment and are now in the final selection process.
“I was told only a small number of those projects which have made a bid to DESNZ can be selected, and Parc Adfer is predominately competing against projects based in Northwest England for access to a pipeline which will run through North Wales.
“This is a significant and exciting project for Wales and I was pleased to have the opportunity to learn more about it.
“They have done incredibly well to reach the final selection process and I look forward to hearing the outcome.
“Whatever way it goes, they deserve to be incredibly proud of what they have achieved at Parc Aber.
“I thank them for inviting me for such an informative visit and I have vowed to support them in any way that I can.”
Shadow Economy and Energy Secretary Samuel Kurtz MS added:
"This is a great example of proactivity and circularity in the economy and could serve as an example for others to follow and I thank enfinium for the warm welcome.
"I’m committed to seeing a Welsh economy that is open for business while being proactive and pragmatic in tackling the challenges of today."
