Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has called on the Welsh Government to promote responsible dog ownership in a bid to relieve pressures on overwhelmed animal rescue centres in North Wales.
Speaking in yesterday’s meeting of the Welsh Parliament, Darren said one rescue centre is in a position where they’re having to euthanise perfectly healthy animals because they are at capacity.
Raising the matter in the Business Statement, Darren said:
“Can I call for a statement from the Cabinet Secretary with responsibility for annual welfare specifically in relation to dog welfare and dog rescue centres?
“As many Members will know, I am the proud owner of a rescue whippet called Blue. He will be 15 years old this Christmas, and he's very, very close to my heart. But I do know, from visits to rescue centres in North Wales, that they're currently absolutely overwhelmed.
“I had an e-mail from Almost Home, a North Wales based rescue centre and they say they're in a very, very worrying position. The rescue centre is full. They're having to turn animals away. And unfortunately, they're in a position where they're having to euthanise perfectly healthy animals because of the sheer numbers that are coming to their doors, including entire litters of pups.
“This is a tragedy. We need to do something to help resolve these matters, and I would be grateful to know what action the Welsh Government is taking to promote responsible dog ownership and responsible dog breeding in order to address some of these challenges.”
Responding, the Trefnydd (Business Manager), said she would ask the Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary “to look at this in terms of rescue centres for dogs”.
