Shadow Minister for North Wales and Clwyd West MS Darren Millar attended an event in the Senedd this week for an update on work currently underway to develop the site of the former nuclear power station in Trawsfynyd.  

At the drop-in session with Cwmni Egino, which was sponsored by North Wales MS Sam Rowlands, Darren met with Cwmni Egino’s Chief Executive, Alan Raymant, and Head of Stakeholder Engagement and Communications, Elliw Williams.  

Cwmni Egino is a Welsh Government-backed company which was set up in 2021 to create sustainable jobs and promote economic and social regeneration by facilitating development at the former nuclear power station site.

The existing nuclear station at Trawsfynydd, which at its peak employed over 700 people, shut down in 1993 and decommissioning has been ongoing since 1995.

Cwmni Egino is embarking on an ambitious programme to bring small modular reactor (SMR) technology to the site, with a target date for construction to start in 2027.

The company is working together with the landowner, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), on proposals for the siting of a new nuclear development at Trawsfynydd.

Darren, who earlier this year visited the site with Sam Rowlands, said:

“It was good to be able to attend this drop-in session in the Senedd to learn more about the exciting work that is underway at the site.

“New nuclear power at Trawsfynydd will be a huge project for North Wales, creating new well-paid jobs in the region.  North Wales is already home to factories producing components for small modular reactors, and it’s encouraging to see the region at the heart of a new nuclear revolution.

“This type of development at Trawsfynydd will also help to meet energy needs and Net Zero targets, and support the levelling up agenda.
