Clwyd West MS Darren Millar is calling for the Senedd to urgently ditch the virtual plenary sessions and return to a hybrid format.

The Welsh Parliament moved to virtual sittings just before Christmas due to concerns surrounding the omicron variant of coronavirus.

And even though the threat of omicron has reduced and restrictions are easing in Wales, Senedd Members have been informed that fully virtual plenary sessions are here to stay for another week at least.

Welsh Conservative Business Manager, Darren Millar MS, said:

“As restrictions are easing and we learn to live with coronavirus, it is vital that elected members have the choice to return to the Senedd to execute their duties as effectively as possible.

“It is only right that Ministers are in the chamber when delivering important statements, rather than via Zoom which can throw up all sorts of problems.

“The hybrid format – as was in place last year – allows for more effective scrutiny of ministers, who are unable to rely on officials and advisers providing off screen support and prompts, as can be the case in a virtual attendance in the Senedd chamber.

“We all need to continue to be vigilant and keep people safe but working from home can be a challenge for some due to issues such as childcare and broadband reliability, and it can also have a negative impact on peoples’ mental health.

“Parliaments elsewhere in the UK and around the world are able to meet safely and in person, and there is no reason that the Welsh Parliament should be prevented from doing so.”
