Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the Senedd and Clwyd West MS Darren Millar is promoting about an exciting fully funded opportunity for young people aged between 15-18 to study at a Japanese High School.
The Asia-Kakehashi Projectrun by AFS, and is supported by the Japanese government. AFS is a global non-profit organisation that offers intercultural exchange programmes for students. These programs help students develop cross-cultural understanding and global citizenship skills. FYI, Ambassador Suzuki is an AFS alumnus.
The Asia Kakehashi Project is a Japanese government-sponsored scholarship programme designed to strengthen relations between Japan and countries across Asia and the G7. The term "Kakehashi" translates to "bridge" in Japanese, symbolising the project's aim to build connections between high school students in Japan and their counterparts abroad.
Encouraging young people in North Wales to apply, Darren said
“This four-month exchange allows students aged 15-18 to study at a Japanese high school, live with a host family or in a dormitory, and immerse themselves in Japanese culture.
“They are particularly looking for students who have some previous experience or interest in the Japanese language, whether through self-study or formal lessons.
“The scholarship covers flights, tuition, and accommodation.
“This is an exciting opportunity for young people and I encourage those interested to find out more and consider applying.”
He added:
“2025 is an especially exciting year for students from Wales to take part in, as it marks the Year of Wales and Japan—a celebration of the cultural and business ties between our two nations. This initiative aims to strengthen existing links, forge new connections, and boost investment, making it the perfect time for students to experience Japan firsthand.”
Applications are open to all students aged 15 to 18 who reside in the UK.
Applications are now open and will be assessed by AFS Wales, after which shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview. The deadline to apply is 17th March 2025. More details can be found here: https://www.afs.wales/kakehashi-project-2025/.
