Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed a commitment by the Welsh Government to follow England and Scotland’s lead by introducing Baby Loss certificates in Wales.
In October, during Baby Loss Awareness Week, Darren expressed concern in the Senedd chamber that baby loss certificates are available in England and Scotland, but not in Wales.
He called for a formal statement to be made by the Welsh Government on its approach to baby loss certificates “to make sure that those who've suffered such painful experiences in Wales can have the opportunity to have a baby loss certificate in recognition of their loss”.
He also tabled a written question asking: “What action is the Welsh Government taking to ensure that baby-loss certificates can be issued in Wales?”
He has therefore welcomed a letter he has received this week from the Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing, Sarah Murphy MS, in which she outlines her commitment to ensuring certificates are introduced in Wales.
Her letter states:
“On 22 February 2024, the UK Government launched a voluntary scheme to enable parents whose baby died before 24 weeks of pregnancy to apply for a free certificate to provide recognition of their loss. The eligibility criteria for this scheme have recently been extended. Agreement was made in principle to extend the scheme to Wales before the General Election. I have written to the Secretary of State for Health to expedite this work.”
Welcoming this commitment, Darren said:
“I am extremely pleased that the Minister recognises that baby loss at any stage of pregnancy is distressing and the importance of these certificates to parents.
“I welcome her commitment to ensuring that Wales catches up to other parts of the UK as quickly as possible.
“Losing a baby is heartbreaking and it is important that we support all parents who experience it in the best way we possibly can. Whilst not everyone affected will feel the need for a baby loss certificate, we must ensure that they are available for those that do want one.”
