Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar is concerned at the amount of roadside litter and flytipping that has taken place across Conwy over the festive period and is calling on Conwy County Borough Council to address the problem.
Rubbish has been dumped at roadsides throughout the county and Darren believes it is the introduction of four weekly bin collections at the end of last year which is to blame for the increase.
Last year, despite strong opposition from residents, Conwy Council voted to scrap fortnightly bin collections in favour of three weekly collections and decided to run a pilot of four weekly pick-ups for those having collections on Monday's across of the county.
The monthly collections are currently being trialled throughout Conwy county at approximately 10,300 households. Residual waste, which goes to landfill, is being collected every four weeks, with food waste and recycling collections remaining weekly.
Darren, who has been leading a campaign against the bin collections cuts and led a petition calling for the proposals to be ditched, said he has never seen so much roadside rubbish in the county and believes it is a direct result of changes to the bin collections.
He said:
“Roadside litter and flytipping in the Conwy County Borough area is the worst I've ever seen it and these photos which I took on a journey of just a few miles show just the tip of the iceberg.
“The increase in the problem seems to have coincided with the introduction of four weekly bin collections and there isn't a week that goes by that I don’t receive complaints.
“The situation is totally unacceptable and unless it is addressed then it could have a detrimental impact on our tourism industry and local wildlife.
“Conwy must rethink its bin collection cuts and organise an area wide litter and flytipping cleanup as soon as possible.”
