Clwyd West MS and Shadow Minister for North Wales, Darren Millar, has welcomed news that plans to cut the school summer holiday have been shelved until after the next Welsh Parliament election, but is now calling for them to be scrapped altogether.
The Labour Welsh Government plans involved extending the half term break to a fortnight, with a five week rather than six-week holiday in summer.
The changes were due to come into effect from October 2025.
Today, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, announced that the proposals were to be put on hold.
Darren, who is against the changes has therefore welcomed today’s news, however he is now calling for the proposals to be scrapped altogether.
He said:
“The proposed changes to the school year by the Labour Welsh Government are opposed by parents, teachers, education unions, and tourism operators.
“I was therefore extremely pleased to hear from the Cabinet Secretary for Education that they will not come into force now as planned in October 2025.
“Hopefully, this pause will allow the Welsh Government to consider more in-depth the impact that these changes would have, particularly on our tourism industry, and scrap the proposals completely.
“Quite frankly, there are far more pressing matters within education that the Welsh Government should be focussing on.”
