Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has welcomed UK Conservative Government plans to ban leasehold contracts on new properties in England and is calling on the Welsh Labour-led Government to introduce the same in Wales.
Darren said there have been developments in Ruthin and Colwyn Bay with inappropriate leasehold schemes and hopes the Welsh Labour Government will follow the UK Government’s lead in introducing a ban here, making housing more affordable for people in Clwyd West.
Darren said:
“The action that is being taken to address this issue in England has been widely welcomed but we also need action to protect homeowners here in Wales.
“There have been a number of developments in my constituency with inappropriate leasehold schemes and introducing a ban would put an end to that.
“Leasehold contracts have become a form of consumer exploitation where housing developers can reap huge benefits. Crippling ground rents and increasing management charges are making properties unaffordable and difficult to sell. It is vital that the Welsh Government look to what is being done in England and follow suit to ease the financial burden of home ownership in Wales.”
