Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar has kicked off Armed Forces and Reserves Week by hosting an event in the Senedd at which he paid tribute to the significant contribution that Reservists make in supporting the Armed Forces. 

Speaking at Tuesday’s Employer Engagement Reception for Reservists, Darren, who is Chair of the Assembly Cross-Party Group on the Armed Forces and Cadets, said that the more than 2,200 Reservists in Wales are a vital and valued part of the Defence family

He said:

“Reserve Forces make up approximately one sixth of our Armed Forces personnel and as such are integral to protecting the Nation’s security at home and overseas, particularly providing capability in specialist areas such as medical, cyber and logistics.

“We are here this evening to  recognise the significant contribution that Reservists make by  giving up their spare time to serve in the Reserve Forces, balancing their civilian employment and family life with a military career to ensure that should their Country require them, they would be ready to serve and contribute to the Defence effort.

“Equally, it is hugely important to thank employers of reservists for their willingness to create the circumstances for them to contribute effectively to the Nation’s defence.  Allowing the necessary time off and support to confidently fulfil those training commitments is so welcome.  Without your support reservists would find it increasingly difficult to play a full role supporting our Armed Forces. 

“Reserve service develops the reservist so that he can bring the skills and experience gained from the military that enhances his contribution to your business.  It is also true to say that the reservist will bring skills from their civilian employment to the Services.  It is a two-way process that is working very well.”

Darren also referred to the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Awards, which officially recognise employer organisations who have made a formal commitment to demonstrate and champion their support to defence and the armed forces community, and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant. 

“They are exemplar employers for a variety of members of the Defence Family that includes reservists, veterans, spouses and those wounded, injured and sick because they acknowledge the unique talents and in some cases the challenges that such groups have to face.”
