Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar has been appointed to the Education and Children brief for the Welsh Conservatives.
Darren, who was formerly the Shadow Health Minister, is delighted to take on the new role and is looking forward to engaging with stakeholders across Wales.
His appointment coincided with a visit to two schools in the constituency by the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, Sally Holland, who joined Darren in visits to Ysgol Pen Y Bryn in Colwyn Bay and Ysgol Glan Gele in Abergele.
Darren said:
“I am delighted to have been appointed to this new role. A good education is vital for our young people, but unfortunately for too long under Labour Welsh Government the education system in Wales has been falling behind England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We can’t allow another generation to be failed.
“Standards and performance in Wales, particularly in literacy and numeracy, need to improve and I will be working hard in my new position to ensure that they do.
“We have some fantastic schools and teachers throughout Wales and we need to ensure they are provided with the support they need to deliver the best outcomes for their pupils.
“It was great to visit two of these schools in my constituency with the Children’s Commissioner for Wales following my appointment.
“During the visit to Pen Y Bryn we met with members of the School Council, and the Eco Council to hear their ideas for new Welsh laws and at Glan Gele we joined a 90th Birthday Party for HM the Queen and toured the building.
“I enjoyed meeting both pupils and staff at both schools and look forward to working with them, and other schools across Wales, in my new role to raise school standards and provide our young people with the first class education they need for a prosperous future.”
