Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has pledged his support for Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning which raises money to help people living with cancer live life as fully as they can.
At a Macmillan Coffee Morning held at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, Darren enjoyed a cup of coffee, slice of cake and a chat with some of the charity’s specialist cancer workforce – including Macmillan nurses, information support specialists and welfare benefits advisers.
He also met with some Macmillan Wales volunteers who shared their cancer experiences and the reasons why they give their free time to support the charity.
This is the 28th year of Macmillan’s flagship fundraising event, which raised more than £26 million in the UK last year. And while World’s Biggest Coffee Morning has grown over the years - with nearly 200,000 people planning on taking part in homes, workplaces and schools across the country in 2019- the idea remains as simple as ever: come together in support of people living with cancer and raise money for Macmillan.
Speaking about supporting the annual fundraising event, Darren said:
“Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is a wonderful fundraising event that takes place in homes, schools and workplaces throughout Wales.
“It’s a lovely social activity and a great way to get together, share a slice of cake, and a cuppa and raise some money for charity.
“Each year in Wales, 19,000 people receive the devastating news that they have cancer.
“A cancer diagnoses can affect every aspect of a person’s life from their day-to-day living and relationships to finances and mental health.
“Macmillan Cancer Support is out there in our communities, offering personal, one-to-one care and support to people living with cancer and to their loved ones, and that’s why I am supporting the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.”
Richard Pugh, Head of Services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, said “It’s great to see Assembly Members supporting Macmillan’s work in Wales and we’d like to thank Darren for his support.
“Last year, Wales did us proud, with coffee morning supporters raising nearly £1.1 million to help us be there for people with cancer in communities across Wales.
“Everyone who hosts or attends a World’s Biggest Coffee Morning helps to fund our services and our fantastic Macmillan professionals who work tirelessly to support people with cancer and their loved ones.
“At the coffee morning, AMs raised a cuppa to our cancer workforce in Wales and Macmillan wants to make sure we have the right workforce with the right training and capacity to meet the growing demand for personalised cancer care in Wales.”
Macmillan’s Coffee Morning takes place on Friday 27 September (but you can host yours whenever you want) and it couldn’t be easier to get involved. All you need to do is bring your community together - whether it’s friends, family, colleagues or others - and raise money for Macmillan.
