They may have been too young to vote in last week’s General Election, but youngsters at a Kinmel Bay school still got to take to the polls.
Ysgol y Foryd held its own election for Prime Minister on the same day as the General Election. Pupils had to produce their own manifesto and went to the polls in a secret ballot on Thursday.
Clwyd West AM Darren Millar visited the school on Monday to meet and congratulate their new Prime Minister Isaac Maher.
Darren said:
"It is always good to see youngsters showing an interest in politics. It was great to meet Isaac and their campaign manager Dillan MacDonald and to hear all about their campaign. Dillan wrote to me asking for advice for the campaign so I’m glad it paid off!
“I would like to congratulate headteacher, Stephanie Cartmel, and her team for recreating the excitement and drama of a real election and giving the pupils a taste of what politics is all about. These may be names to look out for in the future!”
Stephanie Cartmel, said:
“We were really keen to teach young people about elections and democracy in a fun way. The children really got into the campaigning spirit by running as candidates, creating manifestos, canvassing support, as well as casting their first votes on polling day. I was very impressed with everyone who took part.”
